2011 is going to be a year in which the fashion industry erupts with new up and coming geniuses. He has been on the scene for quite a while has already worked for the likes of Bottega Veneta and Gucci. However, Giles Deacon's S/S 2011 collection really toed the line between high fashion and fancy dress, wowing the audience. Before launching his own label, GILES in 2003, he collaborated with New Look, establishing a name for himself.
He has sparked a renewed interest in London fashion. He challenges the traditional ideas of womenswear and uses wild prints and pop culture references in his designs. His designs for GILES are humorous, dark and sexy, they are aimed at young girls and women of sixty years alike. He aims at women who want to be noticed and the dresses below certainly evoke this.
I adore these dresses, those who know me will agree with me when I say I have a rather...different...sense of style, being recently described as dressing like "an eccentric old lady". Hence the above looks really appeal to me, especially the last one. The dress is majestic and elegant, perfect to stride through a party in leaving jaws hanging.
The entire collection is incredibly beautiful and innovative. It is feminine yet quirky. The shapes embrace a certain womanly beauty yet each look has a playful element to it, the giant wool accessories for example. Such things would remind you of digging through your parents wardrobe for hours and emerging looking ridiculous. The prints are stunning, I particularly love the jumpers in the photos below. Deacon brings the tacky Christmas jumper into high fashion. At a first glance some of the colours seem to clash but when the entire collection is viewed, it is so easy to notice a stunning harmony of navys, pinks and yellows. He combines pretty, dainty dresses with chunky trainers, another really edgy technique.
I am quite confident in saying that there is no doubt that Giles Deacon will be firmly in the middle of the fashion world for quite a while. He has already been named "Best New Designer" at the British Fashion Awards and then "British Fashion Designer of the Year" in 2006.
The best is yet to come, á mon avis.
